Most water heater leaks don’t start with a flood — they start with clues. Catch any of these seven signs early and you’ll usually be choosing a repair; miss them and you may be choosing new flooring.
1. Water pooling at the tank base
The most obvious sign — and still the most ignored. A shallow puddle that ‘dries up on its own’ is usually just evaporating between slow seeps. Press a dry paper towel around the tank base; if it wicks moisture, you have an active leak.
2. Rust streaks or corrosion
Orange-brown streaks running down the tank shell or crust around fittings mean water has been escaping — possibly for weeks. Surface rust on a fitting is a repair; streaks from the tank seam suggest the shell itself is failing.
3. A hissing or sizzling sound
Water dripping onto a hot burner or element sizzles. If you hear hissing near the heater with no visible water, the leak may be internal or evaporating on contact — still a leak, still worth a call.
4. Rusty or discolored hot water
Clear cold water but rusty hot water points to internal tank corrosion — often the prelude to a pinhole leak. Don’t wait for the pinhole; call when you see the rust.
5. The T&P discharge pipe is wet
That pipe running down the side of the tank should be dry almost all the time. Persistent dripping means the relief valve is venting — either it’s worn or your system pressure is too high.

6. Musty smells with no visible water
Slow seeps wick into drywall and wall plates where you can’t see them. A musty utility closet is a hidden-leak classic — our leak detection service finds these non-invasively.
7. Your water bill creeps upward
A leak of even a slow drip wastes hundreds of gallons a month. If usage climbs with no lifestyle change, the heater is a prime suspect.
What to do next
For any active pooling: shut the cold-water inlet valve above the heater, then kill power at the breaker (electric) or set the gas control to pilot (gas). Move valuables away from the water’s path. Then call (833) 713-2101 — we’ll confirm whether it’s a same-day repair or a true emergency.

I see a tiny drip. Can it wait a week?
A drip rarely stays a drip — vibration, pressure cycles, and corrosion all worsen it. A week of ‘tiny’ can mean soaked subfloor. Call sooner; diagnosis is $89–$149.
Which sign means replace, not repair?
Rust streaks from the tank seam or base — that’s shell failure, and no valve swap fixes it. Everything else is usually repairable.
