What to Do When Your Water Heater Leaks: A Step-by-Step Safety Guide

September 26, 2026 • 5 min read • By Water Heater Leak Repair Services

Water at the water heater triggers panic, but the right sequence is simple and safe. Do these steps in order — most take under two minutes — then call for help.

Step 1: Don’t touch anything electrical in standing water

If water has spread across the floor, don’t wade in to reach the heater. Go to your breaker panel (dry path only) and switch the water heater breaker OFF if it’s electric. For gas units, you’ll handle the gas control in step 3 — from a dry position.

Step 2: Shut off the cold-water inlet

Above the heater you’ll find the cold-water inlet pipe with a shutoff valve (lever or wheel). Turn it 90 degrees (lever) or clockwise (wheel) until it stops. This halts the water supply feeding the leak — the single most damage-limiting thing you can do.

Step 3: Secure the energy source

Electric: breaker OFF (done in step 1) — verify with the heater’s indicator. Gas: turn the gas control knob to PILOT or OFF. If you smell gas strongly, skip the fiddling: ventilate, leave, and call from outside.

Step 4: Contain and protect

Towels or mops around the water’s leading edge. Move electronics, boxes, and valuables off the floor nearby. If the heater is above finished space, place a bucket under the drip line — every gallon caught is a gallon that doesn’t reach drywall.

Step 5: Call (833) 713-2101

Tell us: gas or electric, where the water’s coming from, and how fast it’s spreading. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a same-hour emergency or a safe same-day repair — and talk you through anything you’re unsure about.

What NOT to do

  • Don’t cap or plug the T&P relief discharge pipe — it’s a safety vent.
  • Don’t keep running hot water ‘to drain it’ — the inlet is off; you’re just cycling the leak.
  • Don’t attempt gas valve work yourself.
  • Don’t assume a stopped drip fixed itself — pressure-cycle leaks pause and return.

Quick Answers

Should I drain the whole tank myself?

No — an improper drain can scald, flood, or damage the tank. Shut the inlet and energy, contain the water, and let the technician handle the drain-down safely.

Is it safe to leave the house with a leaking heater?

After shutting water and energy off, yes for a slow leak. For active flow you can’t stop, call us first — (833) 713-2101 — before leaving.
